If you’re exercising in a way that isn’t pleasant to you, then more than likely, you won’t stick with it for long. It’s also important to know what you want and need to get out of your work out. For older adults, it’s crucial to focus on workouts designed to help build strength, stay mobile, and improve balance.,Swimming is very fun, yet beneficial for older adults. Whether you’re doing ,breaststrokes,, taking a water aerobics class, or even playing Marco Polo, swimming is a great way to increase your cardiovascular fitness while also strengthening your muscles (Fetters, 2020). Not to mention, swimming puts minimal stress on your bones and joints, which is great for people who have arthritis or osteoporosis (Fetters, 2020). On top of that, swimming helps older adults keep their minds as healthy as their bodies!,Yoga is also great exercise for older adults. It helps build muscle strength, aerobic fitness, core stability, and total-body mobility, which is all important for older adults (Fetters, 2020). Yoga is low-impact and gentle on your body’s joints, but it’s still weight-bearing, which means that you have to support your body’s weight every posture.,One out of three older adults experience severe muscle loss (Fetters, 2020). Bench pressing a lot of weight isn’t required to keep your muscles healthy, luckily. Simple bodyweight exercises such as chair squats, single-leg stands, wall pushups, and stair climbing help keep your muscles healthy., Walking is another beneficial workout for older adults.,Studies have shown that people who increased their activity levels to 10,000 steps per day were 46% less likely to die in the following 10 years compared to those who stayed sedentary (Fetters, 2020).,Joan MacDonald is a 74 year old woman who is beating expectations in every aspect. About four years ago, doctors told Joan that her health was deteriorating rapidly. After taking many medications for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and acid reflux, she grew very tired and decided to change her whole lifestyle around. She began exercising by going on walks as her form of cardio, practicing yoga, and even started weightlifting. Today, she lost about 60 pounds and has a clear bill of health. She still works out consistently by going to the gym five days a week. She went from being fragile and unhealthy to being able to leg press 180 pounds and not have to take any medications (Brar, 2019). I believe her exercise and eating habits helped her become who she is today.,Personally, I believe most Americans want to be healthy since obesity is very high, but I do not think they’re taking the steps necessary for maintaining a high physical function in their elderly years. Adults become so busy with jobs and raising families that they tend to forget about themselves and their health. When we are younger and have time, we tend to exercise and focus on ourselves, but when we become older with a career, we stop thinking about ourselves.
